Louisiana Project
Mid City Dance Project, founded by Renee Chatelain (now an AMP advisor) to give at-risk kids in Baton Rouge an alternative after school option, was AMP’s partner for the Louisiana project. With feet covered in paint, young members of the dance company performed “The Fading Line: Commemoration of the 1953 Bus Boycott” across a large canvas, their footprints telling the story of the beginning of the civil rights movement. The older dancers performed their part of the dance on a gauzy material covering the younger kids’ footprints. Then four of the older troupe members laid on a piece of tulle and simulated traditional dance positions while Ellen outlined them with spray paint. These three layers are mounted on a panel with twisting surfaces.
