TOURS

AMP offers monthly mural preview tours. Check out the schedule and reserve your space. Limited registrations are available and reservations are required.

Mural preview tours include an overview of Founder and Artistic Director Ellen Griesedieck’s inspiration for the mural, as well as AMP’s current and future plans for the mural, education programs, and expansion. Learn about the mural’s tribute to American workers, the people depicted in the mural, and why they were chosen. Hear their stories, ask questions, and return for more visits as the mural installation continues in the coming months.

While these tours are free, a minimum suggested donation of $10/person is encouraged. All health protocols regarding Covid-19 will be followed. Attendees who are not fully vaccinated for Covid-19 are required to wear a mask while inside the building and maintain at least six feet of distance from other parties attending the tour.

AMP merchandise, including one-of-a-kind hand-painted t-shirts and hoodies, will be available for purchase.

From the West: Travel eastbound on Route 44 through Winsted. Pass the Winsted Green and Northwestern CT Community College (yellow brick building) on the left. Whiting Street is the next left after the college buildings (across from Dunkin’). AMP is on the right.

From the East: Travel westbound on Route 44 to Winsted. Pass the junction for 183 and Route 8 South. After the next traffic light, take a right onto Whiting Street (across from Dunkin’). AMP is on the right.

From the South: Take Route 8 North. After exiting via the ramp, turn right on Route 44. Take your first right on Whiting Street (across from Dunkin’). AMP is on the right.

From the North: Follow Route 8 South into the center of Winsted. Turn left on Holabird Avenue (traffic light before the Winsted Green). Turn right on Whiting Street. AMP is on the left.

PARKING

AMP’s parking lot is located in front of the building, along Whiting Street. There is additional parking on AMP’s side of the street (please do not park in the assigned spaces along the river side of the street). See map below.

Accessibility

Accessible parking is available in AMP’s parking lot. Entrance to the building is via a sloped, paved ramp. As the building renovations and mural installation continue, accessibility for all visitors is limited to the first floor of the mural building. Renovations, which include the installation of an elevator, will be completed by spring 2022, when AMP will open with regular hours. At that point, there will also be stairs, a two-story viewing platform, and more than one entrance to the building. Restrooms are located on the first floor.

Food, brew, and catering in and around Winsted.

And be sure to visit Whiting Mills, right next door to AMP, home to a variety of artists, craftspeople, and retail shops. The American Museum of Tort Law is located at the other end of Main Street in Winsted.
