Just a few hundred watches heading over to the mill today. No need for straps—this is, no doubt, our heaviest collaborative project. And it's a fraction of the watches to come.

In 2010, AMP partnered with the General Federation of Women's Clubs. GFWC members from across the country donated over 10,000 watches to represent all the time volunteers spend helping others. Ellen is encasing the watches in resin to form a huge watch link running through the ramp gallery.

Ellen's winter hibernation is over and Justin has moved the circular saw into the back ramp for some serious install work. Together they will pick up where they left off last fall, filling the ‘backstage’ gallery with artwork. Thousands of pieces are waiting to go up, created by all the kids on our AMP collaborative projects across the country.

Moving out day! First collaborative project pieces from the 2005 Mid-City Dance project in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which will soon be installed in the ramp gallery. Definitely have to see these up close to see the beauty of what Ellen has done.

The latest piece to make its way to the mural building: a 20-foot-tall translucent sculpture made out of Makrolon. Created with paintings and drawings made by children and families in California’s Japantown, as well as former internees of Japanese WWII internment camps and their relatives, the DNA double helix sculpture symbolizes diversity and honor for the Japanese Americans interned in the camps.

Last week's install included several three-dimensional elements, including this beautiful piece which is part of the section of the mural depicting Maine fisherman Manley Doughty and his crew. It features a gigantic piece of driftwood, fishing nets, lobster traps, lawn ornaments, and a number of once-smelly bait bags that were collected as part of the Maine state project.

Planning is underway for the stairs, railings, and two-story platform that will become a reality in the next few months! This is an exciting step that will help make viewing the mural accessible for all. And it gets us to the second-floor education programming space and the entrance to the future atrium and Visitor Center that will house the expansive education center! We have exciting plans for expanding our education programs in 2021—the need is there and we’re going to meet it. Please help support all of our future endeavors—from mural installation and education programming to community events and our worker-in-training internship program.

The piano section—a tribute to American music—went up last week. Necessitating two lifts to install it in a higher spot in the mural, the 18-foot piano features names and scores from 118 composers, vocalists, and instrumentalists in every genre of American music.

The "piano" section is on the way to the mill building to prep and install! A tribute to singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians, the piano has layers of metal paint and patina along with dozens of musical scores from artists from all genres of American music.

The major benefit (and maybe the only one!) of not being open to the public right now is that Ellen has been able to motor through prepping and installing many pieces of the mural. George, the miner, painted on honeycomb aluminum, has been cut to shape and is ready to be installed. Edwin, the police sergeant, is up next to be cut.

The lower part of the rocket blast was installed last week—a three-dimensional resin piece that's very awkward and delicate to handle. It looks amazing in place in the mural! Coming soon in the installation lineup: the Mars disc (representing Kennedy Space Center) and the Dust Devil (honoring Mark Lemmon, atmospheric studies on the Spirit and Opportunity mission).
