Moving In: Installation
June 5, 2020
Ellen's mural installation update: Over the last couple months, I've done a lot of work on three-dimensional pieces for the next mural installation: water forms that will be going under the America's Cup boat and the Pursuit, sparks for around the River Rouge, and more sections to be worked in around the rocket blast and on the back ramp displays. While I was busy working in my studio, Ken and Keith Layman were cutting our marble for the 12' x 12' x 14' triangle that's part of the Statue of Liberty crown. This week I finally had the chance to go back into the mill and put this giant puzzle together. What a master work by WJ Layman & Sons! I am so excited about getting this on a proper substrate and installed. Naturally, this symbol for the Statue of Liberty honors our heritage, but more than that, it gives us the opportunity on this tribute to thank our immigrant population, past and present, for their contribution to the fabric of America. With all its complexity and conflict, we are still the best crazy culture quilt in the world.
