Art at Work: Education Programs

Beginning next month, AMP is teaming up with CHAMPS, an after-school enrichment program for students in the Winchester Public Schools in grades 1–6. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students in the CHAMPS program will come to AMP for three hours after school.

Tuesday’s program focuses on musical creativity, with AMP instructors teaching students to use instruments, found objects, Boomwhackers®, and body percussion to write songs together “STOMP” style. By the end of the session, all participants will have written and performed original songs—in groups, solos, or a combination of the two. On Thursdays, participants will use all types of art materials, including found and recycled objects, to create artistic masterpieces. From masks and puppets to painting and making toys, students will use their imagination to paint, sculpt, and draw their way around the creative rainbow.

Ellen has been working on the AMP music tribute, making giant stencils and transferring scores onto the piano. We are receiving some of the neatest letters from people in the music business with wonderful picks for this project, and Ellen wants to continue to load up on the overlapping scores, so keep the suggestions coming! Visually this is so exciting as a surface—and the letters accompanying these selections are drop-dead wonderful, all to be on display in our Visitors Center.

Thanks to the members who came to Friday's sneak peek event at the mill! We dedicated the entry to Kerry, signed the steel beams, enjoyed beer from Brewery Legitimus and treats from Hunny Buns Cafe and Bakery, and listened to music performed by Michelle Begley and Connecticut State Troubadour Kate Callahan. Time to get AMPed for the mural installation to begin this fall!

Every year Arconic sends a group of people for an "Action Day," to help with whatever grunge jobs we have to offer. On Thursday, they cleaned up the yard at the Art Hourse in preparation for the summer enrichment programs. Thanks to our smiling crew: Phil, Michael, Natalia, and Darlene, as well as Ryan, who will be helping with our Outdoor Design and Growing program. Two of the people pictured here are such gluttons for punishment that this is not their first time volunteering for AMP. They actually came back for more!

Thank you to the Eversource Foundation, who provided an $8,000 grant to support AMP's Outdoor Design and Growing program, a new summer pilot focusing on health and wellness for children and teens through experiences in food production and healthy eating, environmental awareness, design and building in nature, and outdoor arts experiences!
