The Digital Story Work internship program kicks off today, with Vance Cannon at the helm! He holds a BS in English and secondary education from Western Connecticut State University, an MA in media studies from New School University, and has been a teacher for 22 years. He has specialized in teaching film studies, television production, and media literacy, as well as traditional English classes. Currently the library media specialist at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Connecticut, Vance has two adult daughters and lives in Falls Village with his wife, where he enjoys making music and being outdoors as much as possible.

Our "Whole School Mural" project finished up at the Renzulli Academy in Hartford, and the pictures of what they accomplished are incredible! Led by AMP teaching artist, Kathy Reddy, 130 students in 4th-8th grade created three 4' x 8' plywood panels depicting their school community, complete with the Hartford skyline, school buildings, self-portraits, and even their night janitor. Lots to ❤️ about this!

AMP's "Ultimate Collaboration" with ASAP! and the Warner Theatre culminated in a performance by Pilobolus, one of the most popular and unusual dance companies in the world, on Saturday. The multi-generational community dance project was also featured in the performance.

Introducing Julianne, our education intern from Northwestern Connecticut Community College. After graduation, she plans to transfer to Central Connecticut State University to study elementary education with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. Before she interned with AMP, she was a math tutor for middle school children.
Our programs director had this to say about Julianne: "After observing the warmth and enthusiasm that Julianne brings to the room when she is engaging with the kids in the CHAMPS after-school enrichment program, I couldn't be more thrilled to have her join AMP as an education intern for the spring and summer! She is a natural educator."

Thursday kicked off our in-school residency with the Renzulli Academy in Hartford. And what a day it was! Our teaching artists worked with students in 6th-8th grade to create a whole-school mural. Eighth-graders started out painting the ombre sky, then projected images of the Hartford skyline that the seventh-graders painted black. Others students created self portraits. Welcome our newest education intern, Nolyn! He is assisting with the CHAMPSafter-school program at AMP, helping the kids enjoy and learn new ways of thinking about music and art. He loves working with kids and is a great help with homework, particularly math. Currently a student at Northwest Connecticut Community College, he’s a hard worker, a great goal setter, and hopes to own his own business in the future. When he’s not at AMP, he loves to draw and doodle clothing ideas, and he’s an avid singer.

Beginning next month, AMP is teaming up with CHAMPS, an after-school enrichment program for students in the Winchester Public Schools in grades 1–6. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students in the CHAMPS program will come to AMP for three hours after school.
Tuesday’s program focuses on musical creativity, with AMP instructors teaching students to use instruments, found objects, Boomwhackers®, and body percussion to write songs together “STOMP” style. By the end of the session, all participants will have written and performed original songs—in groups, solos, or a combination of the two. On Thursdays, participants will use all types of art materials, including found and recycled objects, to create artistic masterpieces. From masks and puppets to painting and making toys, students will use their imagination to paint, sculpt, and draw their way around the creative rainbow.

During the first week in May, our education team piloted two collaborative programs at the Rotella Inderdistrict Magnet School in Waterbury. Students learned about Ellen and her "big idea" for the mural, as well as the process of creating portraits of American workers.
Second-graders made mixed media projects focused on their own "big idea,” while fourth-graders participated in a Blues songwriting workshop focused on subjects in the mural and their own lives, and also created self-portraits using paper plates.
