AMP was one of six organizations invited to participate in Random Hacks of Kindness, an event focused on empowering students to use technology to positively impact the challenges facing local nonprofits in their communities. The one-day "Hackathon" in Torrington involved 4th-8th grade girls from Northwest Connecticut, who were paired with computer science mentors to develop prototype smartphone apps. Read more about the incredible day our intern, Sarah, had.

DIGITAL STORY WORK VIDEO PRODUCTION INSTRUCTOR

The American Mural Project (AMP) seeks a talented video production instructor for a collaborative summer internship working with youth to create short videos about people who are deeply engaged in their work. Instructor will meet with individual interns and teams once a week, 6 hours per day, June 4–July 30. Planning meetings will take place in late May at flexible times.

Video Production Instructor Responsibilities:
• Teach basics of film/television lighting, sound, framing/composition, and camera operation for interviews
• Oversee story concept development and storyboarding
• Edit with individuals and small groups on professional editing software
• Assist with post-production tasks and contribute to social media presence
• Participate in team meeting and planning

Qualifications:
• 5+ years working in video production 
• Tutoring/mentoring/teaching experience
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience in a variety of creative disciplines
• Passion for helping others learn and succeed
• Bachelor’s degree in film or production preferred, but not required 

Job Type: Part-time
Salary: $20/hour

We are fortunate to have two amazing interns this fall. You "met" Stephanie last week, and this week we're introducing Paige, a student at Western New England University, whose picture shows her comfort behind the camera.

"Photography has always been a huge part of my life. Somewhere along the road my passion for photography expanded to a passion for film. Ever since, film has impacted me everyday in every way. I love the way it tells a story through a different point of view, allowing each individual viewer to interpret it in their own way. With film we can do so much good for our world and that's exactly what I'm striving for. I am so happy to be a part of the American Mural Project's team and to help get out these incredible stories of these amazing people through all different forms of art, including film. In the spring, I will be studying abroad in Greece for 4 months. While I'm there, I will be continuing to study within my major, Psychology, and my minor, Film, as well as traveling throughout Greece, Italy, England, and hopefully Ireland."

Stephanie is AMP’s newest intern from Northwestern Community College in Winsted (on left in picture), and originally hails from Puerto Rico. Learn more about her, in her own words:

“I love doing things that are out of my comfort zone, which is a lot of things. My friend, Brianna, and I had just gotten down from an obstacle course when this picture was taken. We were up in a tree that was about 20 feet up in the air, and we were held only by safety ropes as we walked across two tightropes while our hands were intertwined in order to not fall down. When we were doing this, I was the first to raise my hand to volunteer, even though it looked super scary. After the experience I felt that I had accomplished something I may not get the chance to do again, and I was glad I put my fears aside to do that.

After I finish at Northwestern in December, I want to continue my education (not sure where yet…I’ve applied to four schools) and study International Relations. I love helping others, and I want to travel the world doing so.”

Ellen and Christine just returned from the Connecticut Art Education Association (CAEA) fall conference, where they met and worked with many teachers to create their own “work” drawings, which were then collaged into these great pieces. (We love seeing images of “creativity at work”!) Several of these teachers are interested in having their schools work with AMP on future projects.
